49LitterMaid Cat Litter Box vs CatGenie
If you are looking for a self cleaning litter box for your cat you may have heard of the LitterMaid brand of automatic litter boxes that have been on the market for about 10 years.
The LitterMaid line of self cleaning cat litter boxes has several models including the LitterMaid LM900, the less expensive LitterMaid LM500 and the LitterMaid Elite Mega which is Littermaid's most expensive self cleaning cat litter box to date.
Littermaid says that over 4 million cats are happily using their automatic cat litter box system and while that may be true there is a much better solution for those looking for a low maintenance automatic cat litter box that are willing to spend a little extra money upfront.
I am talking about the CatGenie self cleaning litter box which won the coveted Global Pet Expo's Best Cat Product Award at the 2007 show and has received 4 star reviews by actual product users versus 3 stars for the LitterMaid litter boxes on Amazon.com.
Why do I think the CatGenie litter box is the better choice even though it costs more than the top-of-the-line LitterMaid Elite Mega model?
Simple, over time it is much cheaper to own and requires much less time to maintain it...
You Still Need To Buy Expensive Premium Cat Litter
LitterMaid cat litter boxes still require you to buy cat litter, and not just any cat litter either.
From the LitterMaid website:
"The LitterMaidTM requires the use of a premium clumping litter, lesser quality litters will impair performance. We recommend the following litters: • LitterMaidTM Premium Clumping Cat Litter • World's Best Cat Litter • Arm & Hammer Super Scoop • Fresh Step Scoopable • Ever Clean Scoop Away Do not use Non-Clumping litter, crystal or pearl-like litters."
So, you still need to constantly buy expensive cat litter but with the CatGenie you don't as it uses biodegradable granules instead of cat litter.
You do occasionally have to add a few litter granules to the CarGenie because some are flushed away during the cleaning cycle but they are not that expensive and you don't have to do it very often so in the long run you save money by not having to buy premium cat litter.
You Need To Buy Expensive LitterMaid Receptacles
The main concept behind LitterMaid self cleaning litter boxes is that after your cat uses the litter box an automatic rake scoops the solid wastes into a receptacle that is sealed until the next cleaning cycle to keep help control odors.
These Littermaid receptacles cost around $1.00 each and you need to replace them every 5 to 7 days (more often if you have more than one cat). And you still need to wipe down the litter box to keep it clean.
Compare that to the CatGenie litter box which not only automatically washes itself completely clean but also uses a pet-friendly sanitizing solution to control germs and odors.
You save time and money with the CatGenie
Since the CatGenie disposes of cat poop automatically you will only spend about 30 minutes a year maintaining it! Compare that to the LitterMaid's time requirements and then ask yourself how much is your time worth to you?
The downside to the CatGenie is that you need to hook it up to a fresh water supply near a toilet but the included step-by-step instructions make installation a snap.
Watch the videos and see for yourself how the two brands compare and I think you will agree that the CatGenie is a far superior self cleaning litter box solution that not only saves you money but time as well.
